My NaNoWriMo ’13 Week 3

Ah, week three. This is when my energy falls and I start slacking off. Luckily, I’m more ahead than I’ve ever been, I think, so I can afford a little time off. I’m still really just finding the time to write at write-ins and on Sundays. And somehow that’s been enough to power me to great heights. Who’d have thought I’d be able to get a more than decent word count just writing heavily one day of the week and well two other days of the week? Not this girl!

This week I had write-ins on Monday, Friday, and Monday again at my local Panera. They’ve discontinued the only food there that I can eat, so I’m a little worried about next Monday’s write in. Maybe I’ll just eat a plain bread bowl? I had a few people join me each time, which was really nice. And on Sunday I participated in an online write-in through swap-bot. I won one of the word wars and I won a few prizes as well. I met my goal of hitting 33,000 words during the write-in and I got through an extremely tense passage in my YA novel.

Swap-bot online write-in items!

Swap-bot online write-in items and my monthly progress chart (light on the weekdays)!

This week I worked on:

  • Marvel Big Bang Fanfic- I got to 10,000 words! My goal is 15,000, so I’m two-thirds of the way there and feeling great about that. I’m jumping around in scenes, writing the easy ones first, I guess. And I’m still not totally confident in the overall plot. But I guess time will tell for that. I might have a beta for it, so that’s a relief!
  • Supernatural Fanfic- I wasn’t really planning on this, but one of my favorite communities had a weekly theme and I got a prompt during the online write-in that was just too perfect for it. So I wrote the story, practically in one sitting. I was pretty happy with it, too. 🙂 Sometimes it’s just impossible to resist those boys.
  • Paranormal YA Novel- I got through the aforementioned extremely tense passage and I think it actually went pretty well. I read the first chapter of the novel at Writers’ Roundtable this week and people seemed to dig it. And I got some good constructive suggestions. I spent about an hour last night watching disturbing YouTube videos that relate to some things my main character is suffering through in the very near future scenes in the novel. I still don’t know if I’ll be able to write it realistically, but now I have a better idea of maybe how to approach it.
  • Prompt- a Writers’ Roundtable, we had prompts that were pictures. I went in a very dark direction with the piece I wrote. I actually typed it up when I got home and I think it turned out well. It’s just a little piece of 178 words, but I like it.

I also volunteered to betaread for the volunteer coordinator at one of my libraries who is not only doing NaNoWriMo but seems to be me (she writes SPN hurt/comfort too). So that’s pretty darn neat! It’s nice having more people to talk SPN with and the idea she has for her story/universe sounds fantastic. I look forward to reading it, whenever she decides it’s worth sending my way.

My NaNoWriMo ’13 Week 2

NaNoWriMo2013My second week of NaNoWriMo has gone pretty well. I hit 25,000, the halfway mark in words, a few days short of the halfway mark in days. So I’m right on track toward finishing on time or even a little early.

I’m not writing very much during the weeks still, but I’m making great progress on weekends and on write-ins I’m hosting on Mondays after work and Fridays after work.

This week, I worked on three projects:

  • Started a super-kinky BBC Sherlock fanfiction I’ve been wanting to get out of my head for a little while now
  • Got to chapter 3 of my paranormal YA novel before I started to lose steam. So I skipped ahead a little in the story to a big moment and the story is flowing once again. I’m really enjoying it. But pretty soon something awful is going to happen to my main character–I’ve never experienced it nor do I know anyone who has, so I worry my descriptions of it will not be realistic. I’m going to power through and just hope it’s not too overly dramatic
  • Got about 5,000 words written in my Marvel fanfiction (about a third of the way through my goal for the first part). I started writing it backward; writing one scene that references something I hadn’t written, then writing that scene and mentioning something that happens before that, and going back to write that (and so on). Maybe I should have just started the whole thing at the end!

Heading into week 3, I should be able to hit 30,000 easily enough and power through. 30,000-45,000 is usually the part where I start to slow down. But I’ve got some write-ins scheduled, both in person and online.

Ouch? A Discussion of Wands

I own some wands. Seven of them, in fact. My first (and primary) is my special Willow wand, as willow is my spirit wood. It is always at the center of my wand display. Flanking it are two Warner Brothers Studios wands, one for Remus and one for Sirius. They are significantly heavier. I don’t use these wands, merely keep them for display, but I love looking at the intricate designs and personality in them, because they suit my two favorite characters so well. I have three wands that were handcrafted–one from an extremely artistic friend (it’s green and has leaves on it; perfect for a Herbology-loving Hufflepuff) and the other two from swaps (one is small enough to fit in a whimsy jar).  And I have a Harry Potter light-up wand that glows red; that’s my Wizard Rock wand because it’s perfect for occasions where you must cast lumos and dance at a concert.

“It’s dance time.
C”mon wizards and witches,
Get your wands up!”

My wand collection

My wand collection

WeasleyWandsI got an email from Warner Brothers a few days ago that partially featured a sale on Fred & George Weasley’s wands. The wands come together in a lovely W&W stand. I’d seen their wands before, but I’d never taken a serious look at them, as I honestly think I’m all set as far as wands go. I remember thinking how nice it was that Fred’s wand and George’s wand look so different. To me, the twins are a great pair, but they’re not interchangeable. So it was neat that their wands are definitely not as identical as they are physically. And the display stand is quite beautiful, especially with the little Ws at the top of the columns.

George’s wand looks a little bit like a broom, but with crisscrossing, intricate designs. It’s got a pleasing look to it and it seems like it would be satisfying to hold. On the other hand, there’s Fred’s wand. It looks lovely in the display stand picture, perhaps with rows of designs. But when you look at it close-up, it’s more like a pine cone. Ouch! How does he even grip this thing, let alone do magic with it?

FredsWand

The only thing I can figure is that, knowing Fred, it must be a joke. Given canon, it’s thought his wand might be better for transfiguration work. Perhaps it’s the wand itself that is transfigured. “You thought that was my wand? Ha! That’s not my wand. This rubber chicken here, that’s my real wand!” Almost as bad as a glass of water that thinks it’s an oak tree? You be the judge. All I know is that this wand has got to be a bit uncomfortable. I wouldn’t want to be gripping this tight for hours while doing spellwork or during an intense battle unless I had on some pretty nice gloves.

Addicted to Marathons

I love marathoning television shows online. My DVR out in the living room is 97% full, but I still spend day after day marathoning television shows over in my craft room via Netflix. On an extremely productive day, I can get through a whole season. Usually, it takes me 3 or 4 days to do a full season of something, depending on how busy my day is with work and other activities. I love not having to wade through commercials or wait a week or even a year for the next episode. One after the other, I become absorbed in a show, its stories, its characters. I can no longer distinguish when an episode begins or ends, especially for those shows that don’t have opening credits.

When I fell in love with Supernatural, I watched the first six seasons on DVD. I watched some of season seven on broadcast, but I found it difficult to watch just one episode. I wanted more all at once. So I had to wait for the season to end before watching the rest, all at once. Doing it that way was much more my speed. And I still haven’t even seen season eight. I am so dreadfully behind! Sorry, Sam & Dean!

I go through tons of televisions shows thanks to my preference for marathoning. I’ve even fallen for some shows I never thought I’d like, let alone watch, thanks to Netflix’s recommendation system and my desperation for a new show. That’s what led me to give Sons of Anarchy a try. It didn’t seem like my kind of show. But Netflix kept telling me otherwise. So I gave it a shot… and I fell obsessively in love–first comes love, then comes merch, fanfiction, user icons, and crafts. Guilty as charged. I watched the first four seasons over just a couple of weeks, devouring the characters, drama, and darkness.

sons of anarchy

My newest favorite feature on Netflix is how they email me when a new season of a series I watched is now online for streaming. I’ve eagerly awaited season 5 of Sons of Anarchy, so when I got the email I was giddy with excitement. But I knew that the excitement would be short-lived. One season, about a dozen episodes, and the satisfaction would be over. I didn’t want to devour it so quickly and then have to wait another year for the next season. So I decided just to watch the whole series over again from the beginning. I got to relive all the amazing moments that impressed me, scared me, thrilled me, and saddened me. This time, I knew what to expect, so I could protect myself emotionally… at least, until I hit season 5. And then all bets were off, because I had been slightly spoiled for something that happened to one of my favorite characters. I wasn’t prepared, though. Living with these guys for 2, 3, 10 hours a day to have it all crash down in brand new ways around me? Heartbreaking! But so worth rewatching it all over again for. This is definitely going to become my new favorite way of watching a show. But I feel an emptiness now that I finished season 5 yesterday.

Maybe it’s time to put in the Supernatural pilot episode and get caught up properly? Of course, I still have about six episodes of Doctor Who to catch up on and watch before the epic event next weekend!

I am a Watcher

“I am a watcher,
part of a secret society of men and women
who observe and record, but never interfere.
We know the truth about immortals”

Never interfere? Never? *snort*
Were you watching the same TV show I was?

One of these days, I’m going to find my Watcher necklace. In high school, I never went a day without wearing it. Which, looking back, might be one of a hundred reasons I didn’t date much in high school. Or maybe I just hadn’t found the right Highlander fan to share my passion with back then. I’m sure I didn’t get rid of the necklace… but I haven’t been able to find it for years. I suspect it’s in some box from my storage unit I haven’t gone through yet.

Until I find it, I will have to resort to showing my love for my all-time favorite television program, Highlander: the series, in the form of wall art. I am now the proud owner (and displayer) of a carved, wooden Watcher symbol.

WatcherSymbol2

Looks great up there on the wall, doesn’t it? Yeah, well, it didn’t have the easiest path there.

I first saw it years ago at a store at the Maryland Renaissance Festival. As the show’s last episode was in 1998, it’s not often that you encounter Highlander merch these days. I was drawn to it immediately. I was at the faire with a friend who was purchasing an item at a different shop for her house, and I decided to make myself a promise: as soon as I bought my own house, I would buy the Highlander Watcher’s symbol and hang it over my door. Every year at the faire, I spotted the symbol, lusted after it, but stayed true to my promise. After all, what good is a lovely, crafted, wooden anything without somewhere decent to display it?

Finally, last year I bought my own house. I still haven’t had a housewarming party… because I still haven’t moved in completely or unpacked. I suspect all my friends and coworkers have given up hope by now. But it is one of my 101 Things in 1001 Days, so there’s still a good chance one day they will all be invited over eventually. Anyway, last year I skipped going to the Maryland Renaissance Festival because I was sick the weekend all my friends were going. I thought longingly about the Watcher symbol I wanted to buy, but decided my dream could wait a year. After all, at that point in time, I wasn’t living in my new house yet so it didn’t really feel like mine yet.

WoodenCarvings1 WoodenCarvings2

This year, I missed out on going as well. And, in fact, two friends went and I only realized afterward that I should have asked them to buy the item for me. The thought hadn’t even occurred to me. I had such tunnel vision: drive all the way to the faire, buy the Watcher’s symbol, hang out with friends, then drive home. It didn’t occur to me that there could be a variation of that which might work better for me, especially as my recent health issues are preventing me from eating anything sinfully delicious on a stick. However, when I heard another friend was going the following day, I seized the opportunity. At practically the last minute, I sent an email asking if she might be able to pick the item up for me. I included photos I’d taken of it on previous visits, including one photo with the item circled, so she would know exactly what I wanted.

And, because she is a great friend and a wonderful person, she picked it up for me! It is beautiful–everything I had hoped for all these years. Aaaaaaand now I think we have more evidence of why I’m not dating now. The point is, I am now the proud owner of a wooden Watcher symbol to be displayed… um… over my door? There was a spot right above my door that was perfect for it. For months now I’ve envisioned that spot being filled with it. But now that I had it… the spot above my television set was looking like an even better choice. I liked the irony involved in having a Watcher symbol above something I watched Highlander on. And I didn’t want anything too busy above the TV, such as a poster or something, that would detract from the television screen. Still… above the door… I’d imagined that for years! I ended up asking friends and even asking the highlander worldwide Yahoo group for advice. In the end, I went with the spot over the television set. Which, of course, you know because of the image above.

WatcherSymbolI used some strong command adhesive strips to mount it on the wall, in case I ever wanted to easily take it down again. I carefully measured so that it was dead center and I stuck it on the wall. It stayed. And I was thrilled. I took a few photos and called it a job well done. Then I headed into my office/craft room to write. About twenty minutes later, I hear a loud THUNK. With a terrible feeling that I knew exactly what that was, I returned to my living room to find the symbol gone and hiding so far behind the television cabinet I couldn’t see or reach it. After reaching between the cable box and DVD player shelves, I managed to dislodge it from the cables and roll it to the side enough for me to reach it. I surveyed the situation for a moment, considering my options. I had brought a nail and hammer up from downstairs, but for some idiotic reason, I decided to give the command strips one more try. So I went to stick it back up and discovered the fall had cracked it slightly! It’s not noticeable at all, thankfully, but I felt just awful for damaging it. Carefully eyeballing the location, I put it back on the wall, pressing harder this time, holding for longer this time. And this time it stayed in place. I was thrilled. I returned to my NaNoNovel and continued writing, but not before I put two blankets behind the television set. There was little chance of it falling again, but just in case it did, I wanted to keep it from breaking a second time. About fifteen minutes later, there was a soft thunk. There it was, behind the television, resting on the blankets. For my third attempt, I drove a nail into my beautiful wall and sucked up the damage. It’s worth it, though. The thing has not fallen since and I think it looks great mounted there. I see it every time I enter or leave my house, as it’s just to the side of my front door. So even though it’s not directly above the door, it’s still got a great presence and I’m thrilled with my decision.

So It Begins (My NaNoWriMo ’13 Week 1)

My first week of NaNoWriMo 2013 went well. My adventure began at the NaNoWriMo kickoff party on October 27 and continues today, which happens to be the Writing Marathon day. Today is also a great day for donating, which is why my Eeyore user icon on the NaNoWriMo site now sports a halo (over his butt—LOL!). I’m doing NaNoRebel this year, which means I’m working on a bunch of different projects and counting all my words on them toward my total word count.

NaNoWriMo2013

Here are my accomplishments for this week:

  1. Finished the last 10 chapters on a story-a-day type fanfiction project (Supernatural slash, hurt/comfort)
  2. Wrote and finished a Strokes (my original character series) short story that I’ve been wanting to write for 8 years now; it’s the final story in a short story collection I want to put together and self-publish.
  3. Began my urban fantasy/supernatural young adult novel. It actually started a whole long stronger than I thought it would and now I’m even more excited about writing it. I just love that “new story” feel. It’s about 7 pages long right now.
  4. Started my Marvel hurt/comfort big bang story during my first write-in last night. I’m not very far in and it’s not going wonderfully. I might skip ahead a little to some of the big scenes and use them as anchors for the rest of the story. But it’s about 1,000 words right now, so at least I managed to start it.

I tried writing just a novel last year, but I really do think I’m happiest when I can work on a lot of things. And it’s tough giving up fanfiction for a whole month. So doing NaNoRebel is working out for me again. I’ve got a little over 15,000 words written. Here’s to another 35,000 words… and more!

Mix Yourself–Fandom Edition!

Recently I joined a swap-bot swap in which we were tasked with assembling 10 songs into a playlist that represent us, based on certain requirements. I thought I did a rather good job of it: Mix Yourself!

I must admit that I did have a difficult time not including any fandom songs in the list. I had to settle for Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance” instead of the Ministry of Magic’s “Dance Time,” for example. So, I decided to create a second version of this playlist, including just fandom songs. Here is the result: Mix Yourself–Fandom Edition!

I’m slightly disappointed that so many turned out to be Harry Potter songs–not because I don’t love them (obviously I do, or I wouldn’t have put them on my list) but because I have so much fandom music and its a shame there’s no Sherlock, Hunger Games, or even Doctor Who music on this list. But I was limited to songs that best represented these categories.

Please note that these songs may contain spoilers!

1. A song that makes you happy
(Harry Potter) Just a Hufflepuff by Oliver Boyd & The Remenbralls

2. A song that reminds you of something sad
(Supernatural) I’m Okay by Elizabeth Smart

3. A song that is your guilty pleasure
(LOST) Mr. Eko by the Oceanic Six

4. A song you liked when you were younger
(Harry Potter) 99 Death Eaters by Draco & the Malfoys

5. A song that makes you want to dance
(Harry Potter) Dance Time by the Ministry of Magic

6. A song that reminds you of your favourite season
(Harry Potter) Candle in the Window by Tonks and the Aurors

7. A song people wouldn’t expect you to like
(Harry Potter) Astoria Greengrass and the Pure-Blood Prince by Swish and Flick

8. A song you’re currently obsessed with
(The Hobbit) I See Fire by Ed Sheeran

9. A song that you never get tired of
(Supernatural) Tuesday by SPN Guitarwriter

10. A song that you think everybody should listen to
(Harry Potter) It’s Real for Us by Lauren Fairweather

Sleeping with the Television On

No, this post isn’t going to be about the obscure Billy Joel song that inspired me to create an original character based off it. This post is about my attempt at watching some television a few nights ago.

I turned on my bedroom television set to its default station: BBC America. I actually had to go with a high-end cable package because LOGO And BBCA are two televisions stations I can’t do without. With BBC America, whenever I turn it on, it’s either Top Gear, Chef Gordon Ramsey swearing, or Star Trek: the next generation. Basically, I like my odds, even though I wouldn’t say its offerings are always British. In fact, my kindred spirit emailed BBC America once asking why an American show was being offered. I expected them to throw out the Patrick Stewart card as justification. Instead, they replied “While we understand this is not a British show, Star Trek is a massive fan favorite around the world – particularly in the UK.” Huh. We’re American. We can watch American shows any time we want. Just because the British also happen to like it is not a particularly valid reason to put it on a British programming channel! LOL

HighlanderClimax

Anyway, when I turned on the television as I was getting ready for bed, the first Highlander movie was on. It was half-over, but on. Like Star Trek: TNG, you have to work to justify why it’s on BBC America (and right after it? a marathon of Star Trek: TNG, naturally), but I was happy to see it.

I watched a bit of it, then thought up a good few lines for a NaNoWriMo piece I’d been working on. So I went back downstairs and wrote them down. I got back to the movie just as the big fight scene was starting. I had awesome timing. I slid into bed and watched Connor climbing up to rescue Brenda… and the next thing I knew, the two were in Scotland. Somehow I’d closed my eyes and slept through the entire fight scene (which is not particularly short, mind you). I was rather embarrassed.

TNGcombadgeI then proceeded to watch the episode of Star Trek: TNG on next. Having just rewatched the entire series twice, it took me about 2 seconds to figure out which episode it was and to shout out “Nightbird!” with Counselor Troi when Riker asks for requests. But I didn’t make it a minute further before falling back to sleep, this time for good.

Craft: A Hunter’s Journal

As October is a spooky month, Supernatural was the fandom theme for my swap-bot Fandom in a Bag group.

Here are the goodies I sent out to my swap partner:
SPNBag2013

My favorite item was the Hunter’s journal, in which I chronicled the adventures of a hunter who lives in my area and is somewhat less competent than the Winchester boys. It was fun giving her some personality and imagining all sorts of ghosts and demons in this area. With so much history (Civil War, Revolutionary War) and politics (D.C. is only a METRO ride away) I had a lot to choose from. It was part written journal and part artifact journal, where I pasted in flyers from historic sites, postcards, ads, newspaper clippings, and even interesting obituaries I found. I also included a lot of images and definitions from the internet so the journal was part handy reference guide as well. My favorite pages were the ones where I’d practice drawing symbols:
HuntersJournal01 HuntersJournal02 HuntersJournal03 HuntersJournal06 HuntersJournal05 HuntersJournal08

It took days, but it was a lot of fun. I’d love to make others, or make similar projects. It melds my crafting and fanfiction-writing worlds together.

Buttercup Was Raised On A Small Farm in the Country of Florin

the_princess_bride

What do people think about when they are forced to do nothing but think for long, extended periods of time? Waits in line when you don’t have a book in your purse or the hands needed to take out said book (um, is this the right time to break the news to you that I still have a stupid phone?), lying there in the chair at the dentist’s office, etc.

I had a “nuclear medicine” test at the hospital today, which sounds a lot cooler than it was, believe me. It basically meant eating a bowl of radioactive maple & brown sugar oatmeal (three cheers for me not having to eat scrambled eggs!) and then lying immobile in a giant machine for an hour and a half. Stupid girl that I am, I didn’t ask how long I was going to be in there… so I kept thinking to myself “it’ll probably only be another minute. This was plenty of time for it to work through me” and then nothing would come of such thoughts. After an impossibly long time, the technician came in and told me it would only be another 25 minutes. But, by then, I was already busy.

What did I think about while lying on my back, 5 feet off the ground, inside a giant machine as it tracked radioactive particles in my body? Well… I went over the beginnings of some stories I am planning to start tonight after midnight when it officially becomes National Novel Writing Month. I’ve got an original YA paranormal novel, a contemporary LGBTQ short story, and three fanfiction projects I’ll be working on– BBC Sherlock, Supernatural, and Marvel/Avengers. But writing those in my head proved more difficult than usual, as my focus just wan’t up for it (it had better be, come midnight tonight! LOL).

Buttercup was raised on a small farm in the country of Florin. Her favorite pastimes were riding her horse and tormenting the farm boy that worked there. His name was Westley, but she never called him that…

So I used my fallback: The Princess Bride. Now, I know hundreds of people across the country can recite this movie by heart–I’ve personally met dozens over the years. But I learned the movie off the VHS taped-from-TV version at my disposal. Which meant that when I finally saw the version that had not been edited for television to fit the time allotted, there were a few scenes I didn’t know. Every time I get to one of those scenes, I trip up a little and have to muddle my way through mentally until I can get back on track.

Fezzik: You never said anything about killing anyone.
Vizzini: I’ve hired you to help me start a war. It’s an prestigious line of work, with a long and glorious tradition.

I’ve got to say how convenient it is to have one’s favorite movie completely in one’s head, queued up and ready to go at a moment’s notice.  I found myself chuckling a little at some of my favorite lines and favorite parts.  It was as if the giant machine I was in came with a built-in DVD player… that occasionally missed a word or two and then berated itself for doing so.

And when I was a-strong enough, I dedicated my life to the study of fencing. So the next time we meet, I will not fail. I will go up to the six-fingered man and say, “Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

So, this time around, I only made it as far as Westley and Buttercup entering the Fire Swamp when the test was over. I was lowered back to the ground and shown the way out through the labyrinth of hospital hallways. As I walked back to the parking garage, I went through the fire swamp scene and realized, with complete horror, that I’d skipped the whole section where Buttercup accuses the Dread Pirate Roberts of killing her love. I was devastated. So what’s a girl to do? I rewound to the proper spot and started over from that scene. This time, I made it all the way through the Fire Swamp before I reached home and dealt with my splitting headache.

Westley: We are men of action. Lies do not become us.
Count Rugen: Well spoken, Sir. What is it?
Westley: You have six fingers on your right hand. Someone was looking for you.

It’s times like this that make me curious, though. What do people do with their silences if they don’t have the benefit of  The Princess Bride running through their heads? As Sherlock would say, “What is it like in your funny little brains? It must be so boring.”
