For the month of April, I’m breaking out of my usual “format” and showcasing one of my favorite fandoms a day, so I will have shiny things to make me smile every day of my birthday month. When I sat down to write the list of my top 30 fandoms, I found the task terribly hard. How do I choose just 30? My apologies to all my beloved fandoms left off the list. I’m using random.org to determine what fandom gets what day.
Favorite Quote: “You know that in nine hundred years of time and space and I’ve never met anybody who wasn’t important before.” ~The Doctor
Favorite Episode: “Blink.” No, “The Empty Child” / “The Doctor Dances.” No, “Vincent and the Doctor.” No, “School Reunion.” No, “Human Nature” / “The Family of Blood.” No, no. There are too many. I cannot choose.
How I Got Into It: I saw my first Doctor Who episodes when I was a young girl and the doctor had a scarf. My parents watched it on PBS and I sometimes watched a little of it. I remember screaming and running from the room at the sight of one of the aliens and never, ever wanting to watch another episode. When the reboot happened, I watched the first two episodes and really didn’t like them. Plastic!Micky? Cassandra skin? Ew. Cheesy and silly and not my thing. I gave up. But then I saw Torchwood (and just realized Torchwood didn’t make it on my list–oops! Maybe next year). Anyway, I saw Torchwood and fell in love HARD. I didn’t understand everything (hand in jar? cyberwoman?) so I decided I should try to watch Doctor Who again to give Torchwood some frame of reference. I watched “The Christmas Invasion” and the hurt/comfort-lover in me totally fell for Ten in that episode; also, I suddenly understood the hand thing. So I gave Doctor Who another shot and, okay, it won me over finally. Third time’s a charm!
Fangirl Intensity (scale of 1 to 10 with 10=full-out obsessed): 8.5
How I Fangirl: I flew into London and then traveled to Cardiff specifically to go on a Doctor Who/Torchwood tour (the DW Experience wasn’t open). I write fanfic (mostly Torchwood). I craft a lot of Doctor Who items. I read tie-in novels and subscribed to Torchwood magazine. I’ve even been to a Doctor Who-themed burlesque show. I cried at Ianto’s wall. I’m decorating my bathroom in Doctor Who-ness. I’m slowly making my way through the entire series in order… though I’m still on One.
Cutest Merch I Own: two handmade adipose plushies
Favorite Fandom Creation: Karen Hallion’s Disney & Doctor Who mash-up art (I own the Sleeping Beauty one as a t-shirt) and Torchwood Babies
Why I’m Glad I Fangirl It: It’s fantastic to be part of such a long-lived, epic fandom full of adventure, drama, humor, and so much more. Just like immortals in Highlander taught me about what it means to be mortal, it’s amazing that a character who is an alien can teach me so much about human nature.
