Fandom Spotlight Day 21: Stargate

For the month of April, I’m breaking out of my usual “format” and showcasing one of my favorite fandoms a day, so I will have shiny things to make me smile every day of my birthday month. When I sat down to write the list of my top 30 fandoms, I found the task terribly hard. How do I choose just 30? My apologies to all my beloved fandoms left off the list. I’m using random.org to determine what fandom gets what day.

Favorite Quote: “If you once again try to harm me or one of my companions, my patience with you will expire.” Teal’c (Okay, really, I don’t know what my favorite quote is, so I just picked one I liked)

Favorite Episode: Window of Opportunity

Favorite Character: the space monkey Dr. Daniel Jackson

How I Got Into It: I watched the movie soon after it hit video. Then I bought it and watched it multiple times over. I wasn’t sure I was going to like SG-1 the series because I knew it was with different actors, but once I gave it a shot I realized how silly I had been for resisting so long. In my mind, the movie and the series are different animals, even though the canon is consistent. It took me some time to get into Atlantis as well, but after reading some fanfic I gave it a proper shot and definitely loved it too. I didn’t make that mistake with Universe; I watched it from the beginning, only to have my heart broken when it was cancelled.

Fangirl Intensity (scale of 1 to 10 with 10=full-out obsessed): 6

How I Fangirl: I’ve rewatched my favorite episodes far more times than I care to admit. I’ve made crafts. I’ve written fanfiction. I’ve held my tongue when watching episodes with friends so as not to spoil them. I own SG-1 and Atlantis on DVD. I’ve read some tv tie-in novels as well.

Weirdest Merch I Own: an envelope decorated to look like Jack’s plate in Window of Opportunity (weird part is how much I love it and can’t possibly throw it away)

Favorite Fandom Creation: The Comfort Zone archive

Why I’m Glad I Fangirl It: The team. A good team dynamic wins out every time with me. Each SG-1 character is so complex and goes on quite a journey throughout the series, but together they form a powerful team with undeniable potential. The early seasons are my favorite, watching them come together and strengthen. The same goes for the other shows and the movie as well–vastly different sorts of characters who come together to form bonds and save each other’s butts in a beautiful way. I like the amount of sci-fi as well; it’s the point of the show, but it’s grounded in our world so it’s interesting and not overwhelmingly “other” to me.
