Fandom Spotlight Day 14: Star Trek

For the month of April, I’m breaking out of my usual “format” and showcasing one of my favorite fandoms a day, so I will have shiny things to make me smile every day of my birthday month. When I sat down to write the list of my top 30 fandoms, I found the task terribly hard. How do I choose just 30? My apologies to all my beloved fandoms left off the list. Iā€™m using random.org to determine what fandom gets what day.

Star Trek

Star-Treks

Favorite Quote: “Five card stud, nothing wild. And the sky’s the limit.” ~ Jean-Luc Picard, “All Good Things”

Favorite Episode: “Cause and Effect” in Star Trek: the next generation

Favorite Series: Star Trek: the next generation by a landslide. I love the others, but nothing holds a candle to TNG. I really love the reboot movies as well.

How I Got Into It: I probably saw an episode or two of TOS, but my first real memory of the show was sitting down with my parents to watch the priemere of Star Trek: the next generation. I remember them saying it was such a big deal because the original series was groundbreaking and it had been years since the last series. And I remember instantly liking it (the fact that the host of Reading Rainbow was a main character didn’t hurt). As a kid, I was allowed to watch the following things: Jeopardy, Peter Jennings’ evening news, PBS, Saturday morning cartoons, and Star Trek: the next generation. I love that my parents are geeks šŸ™‚

Fangirl Intensity (scale of 1 to 10 with 10=full-out obsessed): 5 (not for lack of devotion, but because I know people far more intense and committed to this fandom and they make me feel inferior in comparison)

How I Fangirl: I’ve tried my hand at fanfics… nothing’s taken except for some reboot movie ones. I’ve got various items of merch, acquired over the years. But I only recently made my way through several series I’d stopped halfway through because of college. It was nice to finally finish DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise. I tried to learn Klingon, but failed miserably; I’m terrible with languages and didn’t have Rosetta Stone: Klingon.

Weirdest Merch I Own: a wooden spoon with Janeway’s face on it (received in a swap. It’s kind of terrible, but I actually really love it and display it on my kitchen counter in my cooking utensil container)

Favorite Fandom Creation: Fashion it So Tumblr. I literally cannot read this at work because I will cry from laughing so hard. Utter brilliance.

Why I’m Glad I Fangirl It: It’s the first science fiction I fell for, and it opened me up to a whole new genre. I love how human the stories are, which is something the sci-fi shows and movies I’d seen before hadn’t done for me to the same extent. Also, watching the characters, stories, and universe evolve over the years was such a treat.
