Top Ten(ish): Fandom Holiday Moments

Some of my favorite Christmas or holiday moments in fandom. I’m utterly indecisive (why did I think that weekly top ten lists was a good idea?). So here’s my top ten… and a couple others thrown in. I expect this post will contain possibly a spoiler or ten.

12 Days of Fandom Ornaments: #8

My Christmas tree is a mix of ornaments from my childhood and ones from later on in my life. Many of them are related to my favorite fandoms, naturally. I thought I would showcase one every other day in December in a 12 Days of Fandom Ornaments series.

Day 8: Christmas Invasion

Ornament08-02

The Christmas Invasion episode of Doctor Who was my conversion back to Doctor Who. The old episodes scared me so much as a child I just about swore off the series. I’d seen the first two episodes of the reboot and thought they were cheesy. But after I fell in love with Torchwood, I thought I might give Doctor Who another try. I happened upon The Christmas Invasion at just the right moment.

So it was great that stlouisphile created this and several other ornaments for me in a swap-bot swap last year. This is the first year I’ve managed to get them on my tree in time for the holiday. Based off regenerated Ten’s image, created by Springfield Punx, it is great to have a nice, solid doctor and beautifully drawn TARDIS hanging out on my Christmas tree!

12 Days of Fandom Ornaments: #7

Day 7: Hufflepuff Pride

Ornament07

Number seven on here has got to be Harry Potter related! This was made for me as part of a Harry Potter swap last year. It’s great to be able to sport my Harry Potter house colors on my Christmas tree!

12 Days of Fandom Ornaments: #6

My Christmas tree is a mix of ornaments from my childhood and ones from later on in my life. Many of them are related to my favorite fandoms, naturally. I thought I would showcase one every other day in December in a 12 Days of Fandom Ornaments series.

Day 6: A Pirate’s Life for Me

Ornament06-01

A friend gave me this Hallmark ornament for Christmas back in 2006. It depicts one of my favorite moments in the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, because it’s also a great moment in the Disneyland ride. When the button on it is pressed a long, recognizable portion of the “A Pirate’s Life for Me” song plays. Last year, the battery ran down, so I need to replace it.

Fangirl that I am, I like to position the ornament near a hallway or place where I walk by so I can see the backside of the ornament. Hey, if they go to all that trouble showing Johnny Depp’s character bending over, I’m not going to let that go to waste.

Top Ten: Fandom Merch I Don’t Want for Christmas

When searching online I found far too many fan-made or non-commercially produced fandom products that creeped me out from Edward Cullen’s giant face staring at me from a shower curtain to inappropriately printed thongs. So I decided that all the items on this list had to be officially licensed items.

Top Ten Things I Will Not Enjoy Receiving as Christmas Gifts:

  1. Planet of the Apes Sky Diving Parachutist- Did I miss the part of the movies where the apes sky dive?
    FandomMerch10
  2. I Heart Ron Weasley Pillowcase- I love Ron… but not in these dress robes, of all things. Also, I already own one of these
    FandomMerch09
  3. Thor Alarm Clock Weight- Why does a god need a weight? And why would you make an alarm clock shaped like one? Hammer, guys. Thor’s got a hammer, not a weight *facepalm* And Thor doesn’t even need to sleep. Double-fail.
    FandomMerch08
  4. Downton Abbey Lip Gloss- Because when I watch Downton Abbey, the one thing I notice is the glossiness of their lips
    FandomMerch07
  5. Destroyed Cassandra Doctor Who Action Figure- First off, Cassandra in her “skin” form is barely in the episode this action figure is from. Second, this isn’t an “About to be Destroyed Cassandra,” it’s a frame where the character used to be and isn’t any more. The character isn’t even alive at this point and isn’t even included.
    FandomMerch06
  6. Hunger Games Lightbulb- Put a bird on it! I saw this at Toys R Us a few weeks ago. It was super cheap but even that wasn’t enough to make me buy it. I don’t have the faintest idea what I’d do with such a thing
    FandomMerch05
  7. JarJar Binks Lollipop- First off, it’s JarJar, and who needs that? Second, did anyone in charge of creating this even imagine what it would look like to suck on his tongue? I do NOT want anyone to be that intimate with JarJar.
    FandomMerch04
  8. Star Trek Metal Detector- Oh dear. It looks vaguely Enterprise-like. But I’m not sure what this has anything to do with Star Trek. But there’s not a lot that’s less pathetic than a metal detector
    FandomMerch03
  9. Twilight Perfume- “The Forbidden Fruit Tastes the Sweetest”. First off all, ick. Second of all, am I supposed to be eating this perfume? Double ick.
    FandomMerch02
  10. Ugly Duncan Mug- I’ve got a Highlander bathrobe, a Highlander golf cap, a Highlander wallet (actually, two, because my first one accidentally went through the wash). But even I can’t handle the Ugly Duncan Mug with the katana & ponytail handle

12 Days of Fandom Ornaments: #5

My Christmas tree is a mix of ornaments from my childhood and ones from later on in my life. Many of them are related to my favorite fandoms, naturally. I thought I would showcase one every other day in December in a 12 Days of Fandom Ornaments series.

Day 5: Silly J2

Ornament05

This ornament features some silly faces from Jared & Jensen that were part of one of the Supernatural TV show season outtakes and an embellishment or two. It was made for me by zombiekittie in a swap-bot swap last year.

Magical Music

DracoandtheMalfoys-CheattoWin Draco and the Malfoys released a new single today and the promise of their first new studio album in almost five years. I’ve only listened to the single six times now 😉 There’s something so thrilling about the prospect of new Wizard Rock. I don’t like to say that it’s dead, because art doesn’t ever die. But it certainly isn’t as popular as once it was. Only a couple touring groups came to my town last year, for example.

“Faced with two choices–To die or to sin–
You know we would all cheat to win.”
~Draco & the Malfoys, Cheat to Win

Cheat to Win isn’t necessarily my style, musically, but I really like it. It’s catchy and, well, speaks a bit of truth. I’m a rule-following Hufflepuff. Not all Hufflepuffs are as anal about rules as I am, but I hold the concept of fairness to all above almost everything else in this world (note to self: remember to grab that Nelson Mandela book out of the car before the next snow/ice storm hits tonight). So, no, I would NOT cheat to win at most things. But if it’s a matter of cheating or dying, heck year I’m going to choose cheating. But it brings up the question: why do I like this song so much, even if the underlying Slytherin concept in it is against the core of who I am as a person?

“We’re not always well-behaved, we don’t always do what’s right
We’re really good kissers, but I must warn we bite.”
~Swish and Flick, SLY in Slytherin

And it’s not just this song, either. I’m completely guilty of jumping up and down and shouting “Gryffindor” at Ministry of Magic concerts when Gryffindor Rally Cry is played. I could not have bought Swish and Flick’s album fast enough and I listen to its Slytherin songs far more than the Hufflepuff in me is willing to admit. So, yeah, my WRock playlist has its fill of JFF and Oliver Boyd songs. But you’ll also find Draco & the Malfoys and the Parselmouths popping up just as often. Why is that?

“Fools underestimate me; I am a woman.
I’m more pure than you’ll ever contemplate
There’s no denying fate.
You’re just jealous about my purpose.
It’s not my fault that your blood
Leaves you second-rate.”
~Snidget, Bella

One of the things I like most about fan creations is getting to see someone else’s interpretation and passion for something I love. We all come at fandom with a shared understanding of canon. But the way individuals and fanon interpret it is not just fascinating but appealing to me. I love reading fanfic that shows me a brand new angle on characters I already love. I love going to meetup discussions with people who have different thoughts, viewpoints, and interpretations. And I adore fandom music that makes me feel different things. Most WRock is just plain fun–not deep, not life-changing. And I have a special place in my heart for the music that speaks right to me, completely in-line with my thoughts and favorite things about the characters and story. But when a song is actually able to convert me for 2-5 minutes into another person, to let me see things from a different point of view, and to let me rejoice in some of the values I don’t even share, that’s true magic right there.

So… the Winchesters Aren’t Coming?

PowerFailures2
PowerFailures1I’ve been marathoning Supernatural lately. In a little less than two weeks, I’ve made it to season 4. But that’s a whole lot of demon and ghost hunting in a very short period of time.

Yesterday, we got slammed with a small snow & ice storm. When I woke up this morning, everything outside was coated in ice. I lay in bed for a second, and then I noticed my alarm clock flickering on and off repeatedly. I knew it was because of the storm; lots of people around the area lost power completely and I was lucky to still have mine. However, the first thing I thought was “it’s a ghost” as one of the signs of a ghost is power flickering. Would have been nice to have woken up to find Dean and Sam there.

12 Days of Fandom Ornaments: #4

My Christmas tree is a mix of ornaments from my childhood and ones from later on in my life. Many of them are related to my favorite fandoms, naturally. I thought I would showcase one every other day in December in a 12 Days of Fandom Ornaments series.

Day 4: Iorek

Ornament04

My Christmas tree has been kept safe since 2007 when I bought this Iorek Byrnison, Armored Bear, ornament. Iorek is one of my favorite characters in the Golden Compass book series and this ornament is beautifully detailed.

Book of the Month: December 2013

November’s Fandom Book of the Month book was Redshirts… which I am still reading. Sorry. NaNoWriMo stole my free time last month!

TwastheNightbeforeChristmukkah This month’s book is ‘Twas The Night Before Chrismukkah (The O.C. Series Book 7) by Andes Hruby, Josh Schwartz. I just love fandomy holiday celebrations, from Festivus to A Very Supernatural Christmas, and what better way to celebrate the fandom side of the holiday than to dive into this “story you won’t see on tv” (partly because, ah, The O.C. has been off the air for years, LOL). Barnes & Noble has it for $2.95 and Amazon sellers have it for as low as $0.01. My copy is a BookCrossing book, so if anyone wants it when I’m done with it, let me know and I’ll send it to the first person who asks!

I started reading it last night. It starts out with Ryan all angsty and crying. Made my h/c-loving heart happy 🙂

For more amazing Christmukkah moments, check out The Most Memorable Chrismukkah Moments From “The O.C.” Ranked From Worst To Best from BuzzFeed. It’s pretty epic. It’s also full of TONS of spoilers, so beware!
